I have just come back from a great break in Vanuatu. Whenever I travel to countries like this and throughout Asia, it is near impossible for me to explain what i do for a living in Australia. Dogs in Vanuatu are certainly not pets but used for hunting pigs or guarding. They don’t understand the usual body language or calling to come for a pat and if we bend down to pat they run away ready to have a stick/rock thrown at them. On the other side all these dogs are free to roam, and naturally walk behind their owners when going to market. They might not have a diet full of nutrients and all the supplements you can think of but they are living as dogs originally lived when they came into the company of humans.

However I came across one such dog Randy who is a beautiful Retriever been left behind by their owners at a resort. Supposedly Randy was being looked after by management but this is obviously not happening. Randy has hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia and is only 4 years old, needed a good bath and the usual vet check over for worming, heartworm etc. Such a beautiful dog did not belong there and I wish could be found a new home back where she came from. She really would only need some good controlled exercise, a bit of physio and love and would scrub up no worries.

I tried to give her a wash on the last day but of course she rolled in dirt straight away. Perhaps to disguise her new smell from the local dogs. Still she seemed happy and slept outside my room all night. Bless! If I didn’t already have 4 dogs I would have been squeezing her into my luggage.
