This made my day...

Brooke Marsh - Saturday, April 14, 2012
I treated Harry a few years ago after Cruciate surgery.  He recovered very well but had an incident of back spasm on Easter weekend, requiring treatment.  I was a little concerned about the fella and woke up to this message which made my day.

Hi Brooke

I can’t thank you enough for the care you took with Harry yesterday, and the extra time you gave him.

He slept for about 2 hrs when we got home, snuggled up in his pale blue dressing gown. When he woke up he was very happy and energetic. The massage and acupuncture worked wonders for him. This morning he woke us up (first time all week) ready to go out walking and demanding breakfast.

That is why I love my job!

The waiting room isn't big enough!

Brooke Marsh - Friday, April 06, 2012
What a site! I am glad we had a clear waiting room at NCVS when Friday the lovely long haired Saint Bernard visited me yesterday.  She now has a younger sibling who is keeping her on her toes and causing a few issues with her shoulders with rough play.  I treated Friday years ago for a severe neck injury (conservative management for disc degeneration).  She recovered very well with Physiotherapy treatment and is the easiest largest hairiest dog to treat with Acupuncture.
And yes Friday fits in my treadmill.... I must say I would enjoy the buoyancy of the water if I was that size.
This is her session today....

A little about this breed:
Saint Bernards are awesome family pets if you don't mind having a gigantic dog being part of your family, if you don't mind a lot of slobber, if you don't mind a lot of fur, and if you don't mind a dog who can clean off the dinner table with his tongue. Saint Bernards are famous for how good they are with children. They seem to have an innate understanding for how children think and behave, and are incredibly patient with them. They are gentle with little ones, and go out of their way not to hurt them. They aren't that easy to train as they can be independent, and occasionally stubborn. They are quick to housetrain, however. Saint Bernards were bred to be search and rescue dogs, and they need daily exercise and mental stimulation. However, they are not terribly active dogs, so they will need some incentive to exercise.
I am glad I am not stomaching the food bill for this household!

Charlie recovering from Spinal surgery

Brooke Marsh - Monday, March 26, 2012

What a shot! Meet Charlie. This beautiful little fella came all the way from Gladstone.  He was born with scoliosis in his thoracic spine, requiring surgery to decompress his spinal cord.  He was in hospital with us at North Coast Veterinary Specialists for a few weeks.  His amazingly dedicated owners drove down and back from Gladstone to visit and attend his physiotherapy sessions.  He is now walking (though with ataxia - neurological 'wobbly' gait) but this will improve in time.

I look forward to seeing his progress and take my hat off to his owners (and extended family) for all the hard work they are putting into this fella to improve his quality of life.

Go Charlie!

Information for bladder expression for spinal dogs

Brooke Marsh - Tuesday, January 10, 2012

I came across this very informative video that may help the clients taking their beloved dogs home who need bladder expression.  After a spinal injury/ surgery it may take some time for the bladder to regain control.  Sometimes dogs/cats are managed at home with permanent dysfunction. Often bladder expression is the most overwhelming technique to cope with other than managing a paralysed dog at home.

Hopefully this video will be a reminder after your vet/nurse has shown you these techniques before you go home.  I spend 1.5 hours on discharge for spinal injured dogs for treatment and advice of setting up a home program to help with daily care.  It can be a long road at times before their pet is up and walking/running independently. From a personal experience with my Missie I can understand how much work this is.

I hope this helps a little.

Cheers

Muppy - getting back to her old tricks...

Brooke Marsh - Monday, December 19, 2011
It was great to see Muppy again on Saturday. She is now a few months after he severe spinal injury. You might remember the picture in her new pink wheels.  Muppy had not regained function in her hind legs. However she has the most amazing owners who are caring for her perfectly and Muppy is back to her good ol tricks.
They had this canvas carry case/sling made for muppy which is very comfortable for her and supportive. She could stroll right into Louis Vuitton and knock their socks off!
There are not many owners who can manage a paralysed dog long term but I feel Muppy is certainly full of beans and back to her vibrant personality. We are working constantly to keep her front limbs comfortable as they are doing much more work.
At home she is swimming daily in a tub, walks in her wheels and loves her daily massages and stretches.  She tolerates acupuncture very well when she makes the trip down to see me from up North.
I am happy Muppy is back to her ol self again!
Keep up the good work!

Alfie fools us - now not needle phobic!

Brooke Marsh - Sunday, December 11, 2011

So I was told this beautiful dog was afraid of needles.  He has been suffering from back pain with possible disc degeneration.  Alfie's vets and dedicated owner have decided to manage his condition conservatively.  Not only does he tolerate his electroacupuncture sessions but he changes personality into 'zen' mode.  Combined with physiotherapy, massage, underwater treadmill and exercises at home to improve his spine stability and strength, Alfie is improving nicely.  I hope he continues to progress so he can get back to his old self.  Well done Alfie for being so brave!

Rancho relaxo for Gucci

Brooke Marsh - Sunday, November 20, 2011

Well summer is almost here. Rosy and Gucci had a lovely relaxing acupuncture session this week after her workout in the underwater treadmill.  Gucci with her chronic arthritis in her spine and hips is enjoying the warmer weather and getting to the water more often.  If you wonder if acupuncture is well tolerated (she is also having electroacupuncture here)... have a look at his picture!  Thanks for my kisses again this week Gucci!

cheers

Muppy and her new wheels

Brooke Marsh - Thursday, October 27, 2011

The Lovely Muppy is getting ready to go home up north.  She had her first try of her new wheels today.  While not so sure at first it will not be long before she is going to be in danger of getting a speeding ticket!

Muppy sustained a severed disc injury. Following surgery the owners had decided they would like a cart for Muppy to recover and get around more easily at home.  Such a gorgeous dog with so much energy it is great to see her moving again.  I will work with her over the next few days to get her used to her new way of motion.  Muppy has also been having acupuncture, massage, underwater treadmill and Physiotherapy daily to get her back on track.  It will be sad to see her go but I am sure she will enjoy getting home.

All the best Muppy!

Geezer a little champion...

Brooke Marsh - Sunday, October 23, 2011

What a beautiful little face! Geezer is doing just so well.  He is only a couple of weeks after spinal surgery and is home and well.  He improved so quickly after surgery he managed to get home the next day.  We are gradually working on his stability and strength as his ataxia (unco-ordinated gait) improves.  He loves his water time, relaxes with his acupuncture and laps up the hands-on physiotherapy sessions we are giving him. Every day he is making gains and with such a keen owner should make a full recovery.  Go geezer!

cheers
